SPEJBL AND HURVÍNEK THEATRE IN A NUTSHELL

Founded in Plzeň in 1930 by Professor Josef Skupa, the Spejbl and Hurvínek Theatre became the first professional puppet theatre in the Czech lands. Since the beginning the theatre has been internationally renowned for its marionette productions featuring the antics of Spejbl, Hurvínek, Mánička, Mrs. Kateřina (Nana) and Žeryk. The theatre travels all over the world, usually performing in the language of the hosting country. It preserves and develops the Czech marionette tradition that has been included on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2016. Alongside its performances for children and adults, the theatre offers productions for toddlers, educational workshops, and collaborates with contemporary guest artists. To this day, Spejbl and Hurvínek remain living cultural icons whose legacies continue to evolve for new generations.
