JOSEF SPEJBL – THE FATHER
Josef Spejbl was carved in 1919/1920 by Karel Nosek based on a design by Professor Josef Skupa. His stage debut most likely occurred in autumn 1920 at the Puppet Theatre of the Amusement Settlements (Loutkové divadlo Feriálních osad) in Plzeň.
Spejbl quickly became a beloved comic figure, known for his wooden clogs, expressive eyes, and deep, slightly nasal voice. Over the years, he has been interpreted by several leading actors of the theatre. As with all principal characters, Spejbl is traditionally manipulated on the forestage by his own interpreter.
